New book: Natural Born Cyborgs

Hi Everyone,
Not to be swayed by any of your wonderful suggestions, the next book club book has now been chosen.
Indeed Mr. Sleath, the "future of global energy" was one of the areas i did indeed explore.  As you know, this is close to my heart.  The other area i wanted to look at is however the area i have decided to review.  This of course is "Cyborgs and future interactions on humanity"
So, here it is:
BookNatural-Born Cyborgs: Minds, Technologies, and the Future of Human Intelligence by Andy Clark
Date: Saturday, April 11th
Place: Brickhouse, 730 Main Street
Amazon:
Widely available on many formats and seems to be copies available in the libraries.
This is a book written in 2003, i think it will be interesting to compare Andy's views at the time of writing, to where we are today.
Plenty of research material available on Cyborg and Cybernetic technology, you can start with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyborg
April 5th is only 4 weeks away.  This is a difficult period with Easter shortly after, so for me my next available date beyond April 5th is into May. Any objections, speak up..
Otherwise, enjoy & see you there.
Cheers
Scotty

Minutes from Bookclub meeting - The Science Delusion.

Date: Friday 28th Feb 2014
Time: 8pm
Venue: The Brickhouse Late Night Bistro and Bar
Book: The Science Delusion by Rupert Sheldrake.

Present: Guillaume, Mike, Adrian, Mark, Tim, Scott, Brian, Shannon, Lori
Apologies: Carl, Amy, Steve, Andrew, Alana, Alec, Alex, Dave, Drew, Holly, Lara, Najade, Jake, Matt B, Matt M, Tarun, Stefan.

A good turn out for this month's meeting with plenty of enthusiastic new-comers. Welcome to you all.
A lively discussion was had about the latest book and after a group vote everyone agreed that Sheldrake is right; Morphic Resonance is real and we are all now committed Sheldrakers.
A lively discussion was had and none of us agreed on very much.
Some discussion was had about coincidences after Kim sat down and announced she knew Guillaume. This proved without doubt that Morphic Resonance is real.
Last book club meeting we decided The Brickhouse was the perfect book club venue because it is quiet and has an interesting aquarium.
This book club meeting The Brickhouse was not quiet but the aquarium was still interesting.
Scott was congratulated on reading more than 100 pages of the latest book, a new personal record.
Scott's turn to choose the next book, date of next meeting and venue.

Please all feel free to comment on any important points I may have missed.

The Future of Money?

For those of you that have been around long enough to remember The Future of Money by Bernard Lietaer you must surely be fascinated by the continuing and wonderfully disruptive rise of Bitcoin.

Love it...

The Science Delusion by Rupert Sheldrake

Hello everyone. Please join me in giving a special SSR/FRBC welcome to new members Guillaume, Matt Morrison and Alana MacLeod.

At long last I'm pleased to announce the next book to be tackled by the Sasquatch Sex Robot/Flat Rat book club.

The book I've chosen could be seen as a good foil for Shermers 'The Believing Brain' from two meetings ago. And while isn't science fiction in the proper sense (there was some consensus at the last meeting that the sci-fi theme should continue) science/fiction is the topic.

So here it is:
'The Science Delusion' by Rupert Sheldrake.

Widely available in many formats, it should provide the necessary material for lively discussion while not being too heavy.

Non-readers will also find a 20 min recap of the major points here:

This talk was banned from TED, the reasons for which will be an interesting discussion in its own right.

As a bonus read for those so inclined,   take a look at one of my personal favourite scientific delusions, the Theory of Evolution, as discussed on the New Geology website:

I'm thinking we shouldn't be too long getting through all this. And if you're like me, can't wait to get together to discuss it all.

So the details:
Book: The Science Delusion by Rupert Sheldrake
Date: FRIDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2014
Time: 8pm
Place: Brickhouse Late Nite Bistro and Bar

Hope to see you all there.

Cheers!!

Tim

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Happy New Year everyone, Another Year so time for another book and beer.

It's been a while since the Sasquatch Sex Robot Book Club Christmas Gathering at the Brickhouse. Here are my memories of that most excellent night.

Present: Steve, Andrew, Stefan, Tim, Scott, Mark
Apologies: Carl, Amy, Tarun, Dave.
New recruit: Guillaume

Location: The Brickhouse,
Date: Saturday 14th December 2013.
Book: The Moon is a harsh mistress by Robert A. Heinlein.

Minutes of the meeting:

  • The Brickhouse is an excellent venue for future meetings
  • It doesn't open until 8pm
  • It doesn't serve food.
  • The fish tank appears to have a leak
  • McDonald's is miles away so in future we should dial for pizza delivery.
  • In spite of the above, it really is an excellent venue for future meetings.
  • We all agreed that we are  "rational anarchists"
  • We all welcomed the move to fiction.

Next book: Tim to choose book, date and venue (why wouldn't you choose the Brickhouse?)
